Idea | Configurar programas durante la instalación [Ubuntu]

Posted in phyx.wordpress.com - 25 d 22 h

Ubuntu 9.10 32/64bit and Nvidia Driver on HP Pavilion with 8400M

Posted in www.ubuntux.org - 24 d 0 h

I've just installed my laptop with a fresh Ubuntu 9.10. I've tried both 32bit and 64bit.

Just after the install, i log in, take a system update (about 120Mb), and reboot. Then i go system -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers, and install the Nvidia driver package. I've tried both the 173/185, and I've also downloaded and installed the newest 190 driver from the Nvidia site.

The problem with the 173 is that i get the log on sound, but Zero image. I get the terminal if i go ALT+CTRL+F1, no problem.

185 - I get the log on sound, and a torn image with white stripes. Nothing that i can watch and do something with, but just a fuzzy screen. I get the terminal, no problem.

190 - Same as the 185.

Dumping 32-bit for 64, and maybe Ubuntu for something else too?

Posted in scili.wordpress.com - 24 d 17 h

At the moment, my laptop runs 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10, despite the processor (an AMD Turion 64 X2) being x86-64 capable. I wouldn’t have any perceptible performance change should I change to a 64-bit OS, primarily because with only 2 GB of RAM everything can be addressed with only 32 bits. However recently I’ve decided that, with 64-bit being the future of computing (as one of my friends often cites when I ask him why he persists trying to hunt down 64-bit drivers for his <4 GB machine, when there are 32-bit versions much more readily available), and my processor being capable of it, I’m going to move to 64-bit.

A few months ago (probably almost a year now I come to think about it) I blew up the second hard drive on my desktop -the larger one- which led to windows becoming unusably slow, probably something to do with the virtual memory being restricted to about 1GB of free hard drive space.

[HOW-TO] Remove old kernels from Ubuntu

Posted in falcon1986.wordpress.com - 24 d 16 h

Ubuntu LogoThe Linux kernel is not updated very often to require removing old versions regularly. However, when a new version is released, sometimes you may want to remove the old version so as to save on the disk space used. I normally employ the following method when removing old kernels because it is quite thorough and can be mostly accomplished through a terminal window. If you are accustomed to going through the Synaptic Package Manager and manually marking old versions for removal, you may want to try this alternative.

Ubuntu karmic: problems with suspend|hibernate

Posted in sergiolima.wordpress.com - 24 d 17 h

Are you having problems with your new Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) fresh installation to suspend or hibernate ??
The are several posts on the web concerning this issue, just google it!

My problem was due the fact that i had one SD / MMC card inserted on my laptop and there are some issues with those cards, because the linux can’t unmount them before suspend and the system hangs.

The solution i found was to create a file at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/010_unmount_SD.sh (chmod +x) whith the following:
