“I’m a PC, and Windows 7 was my idea”. Really? Well it certainly wasn’t Microsoft’s

Posted in splurgebook.wordpress.com - 2 d 19 h

We’re always complaining about Microsoft aren’t we? Well here’s another on to put on the list. Microsoft has been famous for copying ideas from other companies, the Zune, Windows and now, the Windows Phone*, and Windows 7 is no exception.

*Windows Phone? That’s for another blog post…

Here’s the list of features in Windows 7 which look remarkably similar to other OS’s. Read on for more…

Adding AWN dock into Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)

Posted in getindernow.wordpress.com - 3 d 8 h

After successfully adding the aviant-window-navigator (AWN) into my Karmic install, I am happy to see that it is both stable and just what I wanted.

The AWN package provides a OSX-like dock with some neat customizations.

My dock:

To install AWN:

1) Open System -> Administration -> Software sources.

2) Ensure that “Recommended updates (karmic updates)” is checked on the “Updates” tab.

South Africa 20 years later: 2 beautiful letters

Posted in mothertonguesclothing.wordpress.com - 3 d 23 h

This week (February 2) it was 20 years since FW de Klerk’s famous opening of Parliament speech in which he announced that Nelson Mandela will be released (which happened 9 days later). I can still remember watching the speech on television (I was in college) and realizing that this is an amazing speech signifying a whole new era for South Africa.

Here are 2 beautiful letters written recently by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu to FW de Klerk commemorating the event. My favorite part is in Tutu’s letter: “If the second of February were to become an annual holiday I would propose it should be called Ubuntu Day. South Africa would tear down its Berlin Wall, you said, because South Africans were dependent on one another – all of us.”

International Women's Day -- Competition!

Posted in fridge.ubuntu.com - 24 d 14 h

Firstly, some introductory reading for those who are not familiar with International Women’s Day:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women%27s_Day and http://www.internationalwomensday.com/

Ubuntu-Women has tried in the past to find some way to celebrate this event, but as far as I can remember it has never really amounted to much other than some chattering on IRC. So let us try a bit harder for 2010!

We have all come to Ubuntu in our own special ways — every single one of us differently to the next. Yet one of the most common questions we get asked is "How can I get $woman to use Ubuntu?".

Command Line: passwd

Posted in doxdrum.wordpress.com - 12 d 17 h

If you’d like to change your password in a Linux system, there is a terminal command could be useful, passwd.

For changing your own passwd, type

$ passwd

and follow the instructions.

If you have installed Ubuntu (or a similar distribution), the root account has not a defined password – ’cause the administrator account is not the root one -, i f  you want to set a password for the root, use the following command

$ sudo passwd

and after given the administrator password, type the new root password, and re-type for confirming (just follow the instructions).

If you are the administrator and wish to change the password of the guess user, type

$ sudo passwd guess

and once more follow the instructions.
