Switching from Windows

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy NetworkManager PPTP VPN

As I mentioned in a previous article, the only problem I’ve had with my new Gutsy install is that there was no option to configure a VPN with NetworkManager, despite the fact that the plugin was installed. Well, I resolved that issue tonight.

As it turns out, the problem was my fault. I disabled Roaming Mode for my Ethernet connection, which is what tells NetworkManager to manage that interface. The fix is simple.

This Helps If You Switch From Another Distro

I found myself somewhat lost after I switched to Ubuntu. Many of the commands I was used to were not available. This site was a big help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromLinux

Transition Progress Update

My transition to Ubuntu continues to be a good experience. Everything about my laptop just worked out of the box. Bluetooth, WiFi, Sound and Video all worked perfectly with no modification or configuration. I enjoyed similar success on my desktop system. The only hitch there is that, even after installing the required package, the NetworkManager applet doesn’t seem to want to let me create a VPN connection to my office. I’ve posted on the Ubuntu support forum about it, and hope to have a solution soon. This issue still pales in comparison to the steps required to connect to a PPTP VPN in Fedora.
