HowTo: Fast, Easy, Secure Remote Access to Gutsy

If you are stuck at a Windows machine all day at work, but want to get your Ubuntu fix during a break, use ssh and NoMachine’s nxClient to get fast, easy, secure remote access.

Server Side

These instructions are for the Ubuntu machine that you want to control.

  1. Install the OpenSSH packages: sudo apt-get install openssh-server openssh-client
  2. Test your connection with this command: ssh localhost
  3. You should be able to log in with your username and password. Don’t forget to exit.
  4. Install the NoMachine software, which is available here: http://www.nomachine.com/download-package.php?Prod_Id=6

  5. Install the client, node and server - in that order.

Client Side

These instructions are for the Windows machine that you are actually sitting at.

  1. Install the NX Client for Windows, which is available here: http://www.nomachine.com/download-package.php?Prod_Id=65
  2. Start the NX Connection Wizard and click Next.

  3. Enter a name for this session, enter an IP address or hostname and click Next.

  4. Select Unix and GNOME for the display type, and make sure that SSL encryption is enabled.

  5. Decide whether or not to have an icon on your desktop and click finish.

That does it! Now just open the connection and supply your username and password. You get a window displayig your gutsy desktop.
